How to read MICR 670177778

• 670: the city code. It usually follows the first digits of the area's PIN code; here it is Kannur.
• 177: the bank code, the same for every branch of Kerala State Co-operative Bank in cheque clearing.
• 778: the branch code within that city and bank.

The MICR is printed in magnetic ink at the bottom of every cheque leaf, between the cheque number and your account ID. Clearing houses read it under the Cheque Truncation System (CTS) to route the cheque to the right branch. It is not needed for NEFT, RTGS, IMPS or UPI, which use the IFSC (KSBK0001778 for this branch).

Before you deposit or write a cheque

• Check that the MICR on the cheque matches the branch printed at the top of the leaf.
• Use a CTS-2010 cheque; older formats are no longer cleared.
• Write in blue or black ink and do not overwrite on the MICR band; changes can make the cheque bounce.
